Networking Event for Professional New Mainers

The Diversity Hiring Coalition of Maine, in collaboration with Portland Adult Education, hosted a Networking Event for Professional New Mainers on November 13, 2014 at the Portland Public Library. The event was an opportunity for New Mainers with professional work experience and credentials from their home countries to interact with representatives from some of the region’s top employers – and further hone their networking and professional job-seeking skills. Giving the students an opportunity to have their resume critiqued by a professional, or to have one-on-one informational “speed” interviews, and the ability to ask questions is a big step as they learn how to navigate the US employment world.

It was also a wonderful opportunity for employers to showcase their own companies, meet with talented foreign-born job seekers, and contribute to facilitating workshops for job seekers. Employer-led workshops included: Social Media – Facebook, LinkedIn = Your Resume; You got the job - now what do you do?; Interviewing Tips and Skills; and Teambuilding.

Twenty-two employers participated in the Meet and Greet Networking event. Between 50 and 60 foreign educated and credentialed job seekers attended the event, most of whom have completed numerous training sessions at PAE/New Mainers Resource Center. The turnout showcased the vast, untapped pool of global professionals who are ready and eager to work and transfer their professional skills to employment opportunities in our local community. While not a job fair, job seekers brought their resumes and came very prepared for the networking event, and Portland Jobs Alliance representatives met with many individuals who are interested in participating in PJA, particularly for internships and job referrals.
